Amateur CCD and Film Astrophotography
Introduction:
My name is Kevin Brennan and I observe from the Northeast. I also have an observing location deep in the mountains with better skies that, unfortunately, I do not get to as often. The limiting mag in my backyard is 5.5 to 5.7 at zenith on a good night with some sky glow to the southeast where in the mountains it is at least 6.5. The air is usually not real steady so solar system pics have been a challenge.
I am mainly a visual observer, and focus on double stars and planets. I have focused heavily on deep sky in the past with larger apertures. I also have been doing some photometry and hope to engage in some transit search efforts. The science has always facinated me. I have been interested in astronomy since I was a kid and I have been an amateur photographer since highschool. I figured that astrophotography would be an excellent compliment to my astronomy hobby. These pages contain some modest attempts. I am only a casual imager, especially with CCD but I quickly learned that if you want to obtain some good results, be prepared to spend time and money. I tend to actually prefer Halpha or B/W images as they remind me of the view through the ep.
Astroimaging Filters
There has been quite a bit of development in the area of imaging filters. Numerous manufacturers are now producing RGB filters for color imaging. Many CCD imagers are now using narrowband filters such as oxygen III, Halpha, Hbeta and sulfur. The following is a link to a discussion group dedicated to discussing these filters and related subjects.
